How to Become a Witch: A Gentle Beginner's Guide to Modern Witchcraft
Share
Have you ever felt drawn to the moon? Collected feathers without knowing why? Felt calmer walking through a forest than in a crowded room? or wondered whether there was an older, quieter way of living that felt more connected to nature, intuition and yourself? If so, you are not alone.
Many feel called towards witchcraft because it feels familiar. Not simply because they want to cast dramatic spells as we see in the movies or become someone different, but because they too are searching for a slower, more intentional way of living.
The truth is... There is no test to become a witch, no one grants you permission. A witch is simply someone who chooses to walk a magical path.
What Is a Witch?
A witch is someone who works intentionally with nature, energy, intuition and personal growth. Modern witchcraft isn't about fantasy or superstition, it's about noticing the changing seasons, working with the phases of the moon, learning the language of herbs, crystals, symbols and ritual and creating moments of mindfulness that help you reconnect with yourself.
Every witch practises differently. Some focus on herbal magic, others love tarot, meditation or divination. Some may never even cast a spell at all and instead live magically through daily rituals and conscious living. There is no single 'correct' way to be a witch and that's why I hvae wrote this for you today.
Can Anyone Become a Witch?
Yes and guess what my love...
You do not need to inherit witchcraft.
You do not need special powers.
You do not need to buy expensive tools.
The most important ingredient is curiosity and everything else is learned over time.
Every experienced witch was once a complete beginner.
How to Start Practising Witchcraft
Beginning your journey doesn't have to feel overwhelming. Start with simple, meaningful practices that help you build confidence. You are invited to join me in a free 5 day magical journey where I'll guide you through simple magical practices that take just a few minutes each day. Together we'll explore grounding, the moon, intuition, nature and the quiet rituals that help you reconnect with yourself and the magic already within you.
I also have many 30 days practices with a particular focus that can help you ease into that soft magical living without feeling overwhelmed or the need to practice magic consecutively in those 30 days. I encourage you to take only what you need or aligns at the time and return to others when life is not so pressured.
Connect With Nature
Nature has always been one of a witch's greatest teachers.
Spend time outside.
Notice the trees.
Watch the changing moon.
Listen to birdsong.
Feel the seasons changing around you.
Magic begins with observation.✨
Learn the Moon Phases
The Moon has guided witches and many others, for centuries. Each phase carries a different energy.
New Moon : Beginnings and intentions.
Waxing Moon : Growth and action.
Full Moon : Gratitude, power and celebration.
Waning Moon : Release and reflection.
Following the moon is one of the easiest ways to create a magical rhythm in everyday life and if you need guidance as you walk with the Moon, The Lunar Way may interest you.
Create a Small Sacred Space
An altar doesn't need to be elaborate...
A candle.
A favourite crystal.
A shell from the beach.
A feather.
A plant.
These simple objects become reminders to pause, breathe and reconnect.
Begin a Grimoire
A grimoire is your personal book of magical knowledge.
In many a grimoire you will find recordings of...
• Moon observations
• Dreams
• Tarot readings
• Herbs you discover
• Rituals you've tried
• Personal reflections
Your grimoire becomes a record of your journey. If you need guidance where to begin, take a look at my grimoire pages that are available.
Do You Need Spells?
No. Many new witches believe spells are where they should begin, but in reality, understanding yourself is often far more powerful.
Meditation, Grounding, Journaling, Working with nature, Learning your intuition, these practices create the foundations that make every spell more meaningful later.
Common Tools Witches Use
You don't need all of these and you certainly don't need everything at once, many witches begin with only a notebook and a candle.
As your practice grows, you may enjoy exploring:
• Tarot cards
• Oracle cards
• Pendulums
• Herbs
• Crystals
• Candles
• Incense
• Moon water
• Essential oils
Remember... Tools do not create magic, you do!
What Type of Witch Are You?
One of the beautiful things about modern witchcraft is that every path looks different.
You may feel drawn to:
• Green Witchcraft : Working closely with plants, herbs and nature.
• Kitchen Witchcraft : Bringing intention into cooking and everyday life.
• Moon Witchcraft : Living in rhythm with the lunar cycle.
• Hedge Witchcraft : Meditation, spirit journeys and inner wisdom.
• Sea Witchcraft : Connecting with oceans, tides and water magic.
Many witches explore several paths before discovering what feels most natural and many of us also don't define ourselves with one 'Witch Title'. Some days I am very much a Green Witch, in the warmer weather my Sea Witch appears, most of my days I am an Ancestral Witch, connecting with the past and the ways of the old witches. You don't need to pick one.
Mistakes Every Beginner Makes
Trying to learn everything at once.
Buying too many tools.
Comparing themselves to other witches online (we all walk our own individual path).
Thinking they need permission.
Believing they have to feel magical every day.
Magic isn't perfection, it's practice.
Other Questions You May Have...
Do I have to follow a religion? No. Many witches are spiritual but not religious. Others belong to established religions. Some follow ancient traditions. Your path is your own.
Can I practice alone? Absolutely. Many witches are solitary practitioners, some are connected in distance covens and others enjoy joining communities and learning alongside others.
Do I need to cast spells? No. A magical life can simply mean living intentionally, connecting with nature and trusting your intuition.
Am I too old to become a witch? Never. People begin practising in their teens, their forties, their seventies and beyond. Magic has no age limit and never let anyone tell you otherwise.
Every magical path begins with a single step.
